If everyone would have one, it wouldn't be viewed as an item for 'veteran players' as you state, would it?

As I said in my first post, one or two rare ones are perfectly fine. They give you something to shoot for and your collection is more satifying when you have completed it. But we aren't talking about 1-2, we are talking about half a dozen. One of which is so rare that you will likely never have a chance to aquire it as anyone who wants it as a mini would be holding on to it for dear life, and anyone who didn't would have sold it to someone who does.
If they are going to do things like that, they should make the items customized to that character. That way collector's can exclude them from their collection, as they wouldn't be in circulation. Either that or make the unique items something that have nothing to do with current collectible items.
I stopped collecting green weapons as well, because I saw all of these unique ones being given to various winners of various contests that I didn't even know about until they were over, and even if I had, never would have had even a shot in the dark to actually win.
I personally think that unique prizes should only be available in game, and every one should have an equal chance of getting one. Meaning they don't have to be in some uber leet guild in order to have a hope of getting it. If it's to be a limited thing. Give a certain amount of time that it will be available as a quest reward. Make it hard enough that it is an accomplishment to achieve, but not so hard that only 20 people get it.
I also don't think promo offers should include in game items. Collector's pins, extra character slots, and fancy maps are cool. Extra money out of game should not allow you to have extra items/gold in game.
